"There is no end to the wacky wonders . . . no fantasies as consistently, inventively, mad . . . wild and wonderful." -- Asimov's Science Fiction magazineTHE WORLD IS FLAT! (But ably supported by four elephants floating through space on the back of a giant turtle.)
The Discworld, that is, as created by Terry Pratchett in his phenomenally popular sci-fi/fantasy books. Pratchett's cast of wizards and witches, dwarfs, trolls, and giants hail from familiar myths and legends, but in the Discworld they're a whole lot funnier. Two of Pratchett's best tales come alive in these animated adaptations produced for British television.
A little bit Shakespeare, a little bit Hollywood, WYRD SISTERS recounts how three hard-working witches get mixed up in a royal mess when they're handed a murdered king's baby to protect.
An epic adventure with a soundtrack that really rocks, SOUL MUSIC follows the rise of a teenage musician from obscurity to Discworld super-celebrity as a rock star who's made a deal with Death.
DVD SPECIAL FEATURES INCLUDE storyboards, interview with Terry Pratchett, Pratchett bio, character bios, and more!

Perennial Oscar(r) nominee Judi Dench shakes off the dust of period pieces to play a sassy widow looking to recapture a little of the excitement of her youth: she was the star saxophone player of a World War II-era all-girl dance band. Yanking her instrument from mothballs, she starts blowing the old standards as a street musician, much to the horror of her cultured children (they prefer symphonies to swing classics), and then hatches a plan to track down her band mates for a gala reunion at her granddaughter's school dance. The script carries little suspense and few surprises, but the cast is a delight. Ian Holm costars as the band's womanizing drummer (in a dress and a platinum blonde wig), a rascally old rogue who seduced almost every member during their brief wartime run and married half of them in the intervening years. Olympia Dukakis (Moonstruck) is their trombonist, a hard-drinking American widow living it up in a Scottish castle; jazz great Cleo Laine is a trumpeter turned torch singer; and Leslie Caron cameos as their brassy bass player. Joan Sims (a fixture of the Carry On movies), Billie Whitelaw (Quills), and June Whitfield (the mother on Absolutely Fabulous) are among the great British character actors who join the fun. The old broads bring sass to the sentimentality in this fluffy, feel-good, made-for-cable comedy, insisting there is not only life after 60, but that it swings sweetly if only you let it. --Sean Axmaker -

Tuscan Skies is an intimate musical journey with Andrea Bocelli. All of the songs featured in this program are new and have been especially written for him, as they are based on and inspired by his own memories and fantasies. Each song at once celebrates Bocelli's soaring spirit, while it is also deeply rooted in the landscape, the people and the soul of his beloved Tuscany. Melodramma (Guerrini & Luciani), Il Mistero Dell'Amore (Laurex & Di Pietro), L'Incontro (Sartori / Bocelli / Bonomo), L'Ultimo Re (Napoletano & Di Marco), L'Abitudine (Guerrini & Calabrese) (with Helena), Resta Qui (Musumeci & Bocelli), Mille Lune Mille Onde (Sartori / Foster / Quarantotto / Corradini), Mascagni (Mascagni / Marioni / Biagioni / Botteghi), TornerĂ la Neve (Malavasi), E Sara' a Settembre (Someone Like You) (Smith & Salerno), E Mi Manchi Tu (Bartak & Calabrese). -

Have you ever done a handstand... on the tips of your index fingers? How about snapping iron bars over your head as if they were breadsticks? You'll witness these amazing feats and much more in this astonishing London performance of China's legendary Shaolin monks (familiar to Westerners from the '70s TV series Kung Fu). In perfecting their martial arts prowess, these devoted Buddhists have honed their physical and mental disciplines to such an uncommon degree that their movements seem almost supernaturally powerful. From the athletic contortions of a young acolyte to an older monk being hoisted aloft on the points of sharpened spears, these men and boys have conquered and crossed boundaries of control that would strike most outsiders as impossible if it weren't for their living proof. In demonstrating these and other kung fu skills, the Shaolin also enact their history as an enduring order, providing a theatrical narrative that's literally breathtaking. --Jeff Shannon -

Rhino Records is proud to present a 3-DVD boxed set showcasing one of the greatest live bands ever-The Who. Disc one features a live rendition of their full-blown rock opera about a deaf, dumb, and blind boy. Tommy was performed live in 1989 at The Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles, with special guests Elton John, Phil Collins, Billy Idol, Patti LaBelle, and Steve Winwood. Disc two contains the band's second rock opus, this time built around the story of a young mod's struggle to come of age in the mid-60s. This live version of Quadrophenia, from the 1996/1997 U.S. Tour was the first time it was performed as Townshend and Daltrey had visualized it, with live action and featuring a then-unknown Alex Langdon in a spellbinding performance as Jimmy, the disillusioned Mod. -

British filmmaker Michael Winterbottom didn't make a particularly good film until Welcome to Sarajevo, and this curiously dry adaptation of Thomas Hardy's last novel is a good example. Christopher Eccleston plays Jude Fawley, a self-educated stonemason who dreams of attending university but identifies with the working class. Kate Winslet is his cousin Sue Bridehead, a young woman with suffragette leanings and a position as a teacher's assistant. When the two enter into an illicit union, they are condemned to the margins of society, ultimately resulting in a horrifying tragedy. Winterbottom takes an oddly lean approach to Hardy's deterministic story, which leaves a viewer feeling short on emotion just when one needs it for the from-bad-to-worse third act. Welcome to Sarajevo proved that Winterbottom needs a whole other level of personal involvement to make a film that inspires him. Jude isn't one of those lucky films. --Tom Keogh -

Riding - an art, a sport, or just a convenient way of getting from one place to another? Since ancient times, the techniques of horsemanship have been honed into an art form. Brilliant. Funny. And scathing. You might think you already know how bad the Bush administration is. But it's not just the money. It's not just the oil. It's much, much worse. A Patriot Act is a chilling indictment of their stealth movement to subvert the US Constitution and replace American democracy with religious values. Featuring renowned media critic Mark Crispin Miller - author of The Bush Dyslexicon and Cruel & Unusual: Bush/ Cheney's New World Order. Our 43rd President has a real way with words, but we can't just laugh at his verbal gaffs. Using news clips and other media sources, Miller reveals meaning behind Bush's mistakes, and uncovers the influence of fundamentalist ideology in every nook and cranny of the Bush administration. The difference between this President's goals for the U.S. and its citizens and the intentions of the Founding Fathers, is starkly clear. If you care about the Constitution, you may be shocked to learn how successfully the Bush administration has been at undermining it. And you will be even more horrified at what they have planned for America's future. Acclaimed filmmaker Lilibet Foster earned an Academy Award nomination for her documentary, "Speaking in Strings" and an Independent Spirit Award for Soul In The Hole." What audiences are saying: "It really knocked my socks off! In my opinion, it's a much more important and compelling work than "Fahrenheit 9/11." If you order it, show it to your Republican friends." "I had the opportunity to see your fantastic presentation of Patriot Act. Your presentation along with my own research have, as you hoped, made me want to go out and pick a (good) fight!" "It was incredibly moving, inspiring and helped me to further clarify my growing shock, fear and outrage at the turn this country is taking under the Bush administration." -

Author Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels offer an alternate reality that has proven irresistible to an avid, international audience--a universe where the world really is flat, after all, supported by four elephants floating through the cosmos on the back of a giant turtle. It's a world where fantasy conventions have been filtered through an antic, satirical lens that slyly warps the actions and motives of the wizards, witches, monarchs, and knaves that populate them, suggesting a sword & sorcery counterpart to Douglas Adams's venerable A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.Developed for British television as an animated, six-episode miniseries, Wyrd Sisters marks the first attempt at transferring the franchise to video. As presented here on three tapes, with a running time of approximately 147 minutes, Pratchett's cracked re-imagining of familiar mythological themes retains its verbal wit and realizes colorfully stylized visual terrain, although modest animation techniques relegate its impact to the realm of older TV cartoons. Sci-fi aficionados spoiled by lavish computer graphics and the current big-screen state of the art will wonder what all the fuss is about.
Pratchett's fans, however, won't mind. An intricate plot, set in motion by the murder of King Verence by the utterly dimwitted Duke Felmet, encompasses a smuggled baby, an itinerant theatrical troupe, a kiss lasting 18 years, time travel, and other pokerfaced twists of fate, cohering around the three title heroines, a coven of rather dotty witches. A droll, sociable Death (voiced by Christopher Lee) epitomizes the breezy comic spirit that fuels Pratchett's stories. --Sam Sutherland
